Chemical-Free Sofas

Getting sick from chemical-infused furniture

organic-couch

Furniture can make us sick, especially people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) know what I am talking about. Flame Retardants, Formaldehyde, Polyurethane, toxic colors, etc. are a real burden for many of us. I think it is especially dangerous for Babies and small kids being in a toxic environment.

I would like to add a short list of the most common chemicals in sofas:

Flame retardants like Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs)

Phthalates

Perchloroethylene (PCE)

Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCs)

Formaldehyde

Triclosan

Ammonia and Chlorine

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Too many chemicals in my opinion. Getting rid of toxic furniture is a step-by-step approach because replacing everything in the house would cost a lot of money. So maybe we start with one piece after another.

I did some research and found companies selling toxic free sofas. Of course, they cannot provide every color you would like but working on our health is much more important. So I will add a couple of links. If you are interested, just check them out. Maybe you find a really nice, healthy sofa you like.

  1. From a real estate viewpoint I can only appreciate chemical-free furniture. A lot of homes I see on a daily basis are stuffed with formaldehyde-laden furniture and materials. However, when you come into a home that features natural and chemical-free materials, you immediately feel the difference. Natural wood floors- and furniture add such a different flair to any home or condominium. Upon entering you immediately feel the difference and realize that smell feels so good. I would even say that such a home or condo will just sell a lot faster. Love it!
